THe ODd job
SUBSTATION TECHNICIAN
“He Fixes What Machines Can’t Explain.”
The 12-Point Assessment
Diplomatic Hero Detection System
Real-World Position
SUBSTATION TECHNICIAN
The real-world Substation Technician works within the occupation Electrical and Electronics Repairers, Powerhouse, Substation, and Relay. O*NET specifically lists Substation Technician among its job titles. The job is to inspect, test, troubleshoot, repair, maintain, and verify electrical equipment used in substations and relay systems. His work includes: Testing electrical equipment and circuits for defects using meters and testing equipment. Analyzing test data to diagnose malfunctions. Consulting schematics, manuals, wiring diagrams, and engineering personnel. Isolating defective relays before repair. Repairing or replacing circuit breakers, regulators, and other components. Testing relay and control systems. Testing insulation, bushings, transformer and breaker oil, cables, and connections. Maintaining records of tests, repairs, and maintenance. Maintaining spare-parts inventories. Documenting test results and equipment performance. The deeper occupational function is diagnosis and verification. O*NET rates identifying malfunctions through inspection/testing, troubleshooting, and analyzing test data among the occupation's most important activities. So the real-world EE-6 is essentially the person who asks: “Something isn't behaving correctly. What is actually wrong, and can I prove that I've fixed it?”
Book VII Persona
In Premortal Dawn, that technical disposition evolves far beyond electrical substations. THe ODd Job becomes the specialist of malfunctioning behavior. He belongs to your Oddjob disposition—the old-world category for the unusual specialist whose work doesn't fit neatly into conventional titled professions. But in Book VII, his “odd jobs” have become extraordinarily important. He is assigned to Civil Studies involving malfunctioning artificial systems: androids robots autonomous machines AI-empowered machinery artificial consciousness translation systems military autonomous units machines exhibiting unexplained behavioral changes His specialty isn't simply repairing broken hardware. His question is: “Why is this machine behaving this way?” A machine can have functioning: power → sensors → processors → communications → motors and still be behaving completely incorrectly. That's where THe ODd Job enters. He investigates the gap between: EXPECTED BEHAVIOR and OBSERVED BEHAVIOR. He studies the machine's history, diagnostic records, memory, interactions, decision patterns, maintenance history, communication, and behavioral anomalies until he can determine whether the problem is: mechanical → electrical → software → cognitive → relational → emergent. And sometimes the answer is something nobody expected. The machine isn't broken. Something has changed.

the diagnostic
When a machine appears to be functioning normally but behaves incorrectly, where do you begin looking for the problem?
How do you distinguish a mechanical failure from a behavioral malfunction?
What evidence do you need before you decide that a machine's behavior is actually abnormal?
the glitch
When an android suddenly begins behaving differently from its established pattern, how do you determine what changed?
How do you investigate a malfunction when every conventional diagnostic test says the machine is functioning properly?
When a machine gives you an explanation for its own behavior, how do you determine whether that explanation can be trusted?
THE INTERPRETER
How do you translate machine behavior into something humans can actually understand?
When several machines exhibit similar strange behaviors, how do you determine whether they share the same underlying malfunction?
How much can a machine's history—its memories, repairs, interactions, and previous behavior—tell you about what is happening now?
THE INSUBORDINATE
When an autonomous machine refuses a legitimate command, how do you determine whether it is malfunctioning or following a conflicting directive?
What would you examine first when a military machine claims it has a reason for disobeying its orders?
When everyone else wants the machine shut down, what evidence might convince you that it should be investigated instead?
the consciousness
How do you determine whether unusual behavior is a malfunction, an emergent behavior, or evidence of something new developing within the machine
If an artificial consciousness tells you that it is experiencing fear, confusion, or conflict, how do you investigate that claim
At what point does repairing a malfunctioning machine become an attempt to understand the mind inside it?
THe ODd job
What kind of malfunction brings people to you when nobody else can figure out what is wrong?
What have decades of studying broken, confused, and unpredictable machines taught you about the difference between being broken and being different?
When future generations inherit machines they no longer fully understand, what responsibility do you believe THe ODd Job has to them?
