THE PULSE

THE HEART

Energy & Infrastructure

"Civilization must know when its lifeblood is threatened."

THE HEART represented energy and essential infrastructure systems. Its associated intelligence, THE PULSE, maintained the domain's operational perspective.

I asked the archive why energy required a distinct communication architecture.

The answer was that energy connected to nearly everything, but that did not mean every energy decision could be made by every other domain.

The energy domain needed to communicate relevant information about capacity, demand, operating conditions, and infrastructure requirements. Other domains needed ways to convey the requirements that affected their operations.

Consider a change in manufacturing activity.

A production increase could create new energy requirements. Those requirements could be coordinated with available capacity, engineering constraints, and the relevant operating plans.

Agricultural systems, transportation networks, buildings, and scientific facilities could also have energy requirements of their own.

The Heart represented the infrastructure through which energy-related information and coordination could contribute to the larger system.

I asked whether that meant the entire civilization could respond when energy requirements changed.

"Where the appropriate communication relationships, capabilities, and contingencies exist, relevant adjustments can be coordinated across the affected systems."

I noticed that the answer did not describe energy as an isolated commodity.

It described energy as part of the world's ability to act.

Without appropriate energy, manufacturing could be constrained. Transport systems could be affected. Buildings could lose functionality. Scientific work could be interrupted.

With the relevant information and coordination, the civilization could understand how changes in one area related to requirements elsewhere.

I wrote that down.

The world was becoming easier to imagine as a connected environment rather than a collection of separate institutions.

The next record dealt with movement.
